"And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man." Luke 17:26. "So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand." Luke 21:31.
As Seventh-day Adventists we once taught and believed that Jesus would come in the clouds and take all the righteous to Heaven at the end of the 120 years. (Gen. 6:3; this generation Matt. 24:34). However, Satan fills the earth with woe, causing grief throughout the universe for 6,000 years (Great Controversy, p. 673) and the great controversy is in progress for 6,000 years (Great Controversy, p. 656). Since the 6,000 years will not end until near 2,000 A.D. (not yet knowing the year), we see the 120 years applies with peculiar force to the Judgment of the Dead, which began in 1844 (Great Controversy, p. 490) and extends to the Loud Cry (Great Controversy, p. 483). We are now in the time of Jacob's trouble (Jer. 30:7), at which time Jacob's seed wrestle with the angel of Rev. 18:1, overcome, and get our names changed (as our father Jacob did), by receiving the seal of God (Early Writings, p. 15). Ezekiel calls this seal, the mark by the man in linen. Eze. 9:3, 4; Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 3, p. 266. At this time God judges His church. Read 1 Pet. 4:17; Great Controversy, p. 483; Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 83; Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 8, p. 247; and Testimonies to Ministers, p. 445, 446. "The time has come when Jerusalem is being searched as with lighted candles. God is at work investigating character, weighing moral worth, and pronouncing decisions on individual cases." Testimonies to Ministers, p. 448.
"The glorious destiny that might have blessed Jerusalem had she accepted her Redeemer rose before the Son of God. He saw that she might through Him have been healed of her grievous malady, liberated from bondage, and established as the mighty metropolis of the earth. From her walls the dove of peace would have gone forth to all nations. She would have been the world's diadem of Glory." Desire of Ages, p. 577.
"That which God purposed to do for the world through Israel, the chosen nation, He will finally accomplish through His church on earth to-day." Prophets and Kings, p. 713, 714. "And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name." Isa. 62:2. Read Isa. 60:1-5.
"In the realm of religion, mark down the year 1960 as a paradox of turmoil and tranquility. This was the year of the 'religious issue,'...It was also the year Christianity visited Rome...also a year of personal accomplishment...Kennedy buried the notion a Roman Catholic could not be elected President of the United States...proposed merger of Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians and members of the United Church of Christ...a Bible acceptable to all...But no names produced more startling religious news in 1960 than those of...Pope John XXIII, and Geoffrey Francis Fisher, archbishop of Canterbury. Their December 2 meeting in the Vatican was the first time heads of the two ancient churches had set down together in 500 years, and marked the high point of a year sprinkled with other expressions of growing cordiality in the Christian Community...What threatened to be the most divisive episode of 1960...the religious issue in the presidential campaign...may result in a more understanding between Catholics and Protestants."
To the awakened minds of Seventh-day Adventists, prophecy is fast fulfilling. History we clearly see, has now linked hands with prophecy, and the prediction of 1888 has been signally fulfilled: "The Protestants of the United States will be foremost in stretching their hands across the gulf to grasp the hand of Spiritualism...they will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power...and this country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience." Great Controversy, p. 588.
"The mark of the beast is exactly what it has been proclaimed to be, NOT ALL IN REGARD TO THIS MATTER IS YET UNDERSTOOD, NOR WILL IT BE UNDERSTOOD UNTIL THE UNROLLING OF THE SCROLL..." Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 17.
The scroll has unrolled, historic events fulfilled and the Revived Living Testimony speaks!
Abraham typifies Luther, both being the "father of the faithful" (Luther's message to Rome was 'the just shall live by faith'). Inspirations prophetic chart is solid, undeniable, immovable. "History and prophecy clasp hands."
"AND I BEHELD ANOTHER BEAST COMING UP OUT OF THE EARTH; AND HE HAD TWO HORNS LIKE A LAMB, AND HE SPAKE AS A DRAGON." Rev. 13:11
"Michael is to stand up at the time that the last power in Chapter 11 (Daniel), comes to his end, and none to help him. This power is the last that treads down the true church of God...This last power that treads down the saints is brought to view in Rev. 13:11-18. His number is 666." Word to the Little Flock, p. 8, 9.
"I saw that the number (666) of the Image Beast was made up; (p) (Rev. 13:18)". Id., p. 19.
Unquestionably, therefore, the healing of the wound in 1960, as shown by the events of that prophetic year which signaled the end of the lamb-like period for the United States, and the hallowing of the Pope's Sabbath by the United States Supreme Court in the spring of 1961, unmistakably points out that national aspostasy has commenced and that the United States has come to the dragon-speaking image phase – the "time" of his end as a freedom-granting nation. The end of the 430 years in 1960, dating from the "greatest day of the Reformation" Great Controversy, 207, points out the investigative judgment for the living in the church (1 Pet. 4:17), just as 430 years, dating from the call of Abraham to the liberation of Israel from Egypt. The wise who receive "a mark by the man in linen" (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 3, p. 267), will be delivered by Michael after the image beast treads them down for a short period. Rightly, then, the United States is the "image beast" and the President in his submission to the monarch of Vatican City, becomes the 666. Rev. 13:11-18.
"THE WATCHMAN IS TO KNOW THE TIME OF NIGHT." 6T 407
Through the Presidency and Congress the Vatican has succeeded in placing its number 666 upon the two-horned beast. The United States makes herself into an "image" of the papacy by hallowing Sunday through civil authority.
"AND THERE WAS GIVEN UNTO HIM A MOUTH SPEAKING GREAT THINGS AND BLASPHEMIES; AND POWER WAS GIVEN UNTO HIM TO CONTINUE FORTY AND TWO MONTHS.
"AND HE OPENED HIS MOUTH IN BLASPHEMY AGAINST GOD, TO BLASPEME HIS NAME, AND HIS TABERNACLE, AND THEM THAT DWELL IN HEAVEN." Rev. 13:5, 6.
The 42 months or 1260 years reached from 538 A.D. to 1798 (Great Controversy, p. 439). It is very, very evident however, that these same verses are again fulfilled through the two-horned beast who speaks as a dragon; that is, the United States will do to her citizens and to the world as the little horn power did until 1798. The United States will make war with the saints for 42 months, after which the wise virgins (true in the church) will be delivered out of trouble (Ps. 81:7), as Jacob was. We can easily see that there is a 3 1/2 year period from the spring of 1961 to the autumn of 1964, the end of the 120 years from the autumn of 1844. If there is to be a better understanding of this period we are in, leading up to 1964 and immediately after this date, the Lord will show us as the scroll unrolls. (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 17) "And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads." Rev. 14:1.
Logically, time is too short for another 1260 years (42 months), therefore Inspiration declares the United States will set up the image for 42 months, 3 1/2 years, after which the image will spread world wide as "the ten horns...give their power and strength unto the beast." (Revelation 17)
NOTE: These charts are not drawn to test God's people on a set time for Christ's second coming, but rather to show when the second angel's message of Rev. 14:8, last part, is due. Read Testimonies to Ministers, p. 59; Early Writings, p. 277.
In 1888-89 a crisis threatened the United States in the form of a proposed national Sunday law. The U.S. began speaking as a dragon, and the image-making phase began. At the same time God sent Rev. 18:1 through Elders Waggoner and Jones (see Christ Our Righteousness by Elder A.G. Daniells) to prepare the people of God "to stand in the hour of temptation, which they are soon to meet." Early Writings, p. 277. Of this time Sr. White wrote, "This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth." Review & Herald, Nov. 22, 1892.
Something happened in 1888-89: "This difference of views among the leaders led to serious results." Christ Our Righteousness by A.G. Daniells. Had the leaders accepted the message, the "world could have been warned in two years, and the Lord would have come." General Conference Bulletin 1892 "There is not one in one hundred who understands for himself the Bible truth on this subject (justification by faith) that is so necessary to our present and eternal welfare." Review & Herald, Sept. 3, 1889. (Christ Our Righteousness, p. 87).
But God in his great mercy did not allow Sunday legislation to mature, lest his people, who had not accepted the message of preparation for such a time, be completely overwhelmed. So history records the withdrawal of both the on-rushing dragon phase of the United States and the message God sent to prepare His people for the time of trouble.
When the ministry in our pulpits preach the message of Christ our Righteousness (Christ Our Righteousness, p. 9) in its fullness to God's people, there will be seen a great revival among Seventh-day Adventists and the church can quickly be prepared for the loud cry in two years. In the light of these facts, and in view of the coming Ecumenical Council in October, the General Conference session this year in San Francisco perhaps will be the last one before the Loud Cry of the Third Angel's Message. "Get ready! Get ready! Get ready!" Early Writings, p. 119.
